Comparison of different methods for determination of the dry solids content of sugar syrups
of varying purity (German). Zuckerindustrie 105 (1980) pp. 451-456. List of papers |
Abstract: Comparative tests were conducted on different methods of dry solids in beet molasses. In comparison between drying methods and moisture determination by the Karl Fischer method, mean deviations were found of up to 0.63 rel. % with filter paper used as absorbent in drying; this corresponds to about half the difference between the Karl Fischer method and the vacuum/sand method. Reproducibility of the filter paper method could be some three times better than that of the vacuum/sand method. Refractometric measurements show a relatively constant deviation from results of the filter paper method used as reference values, whereas with densimetric dry solids determination random fluctuations occurred in the deviations. A relation for calculation of "true" dry solids values from refractometric measurements and polarisation is presented which is valid for Quentin molasses. |
Short reversible equation to calculate density from dry substance (d.s.), valid for the range of 0-60 %: d.s.[%] = 140.74652 * ln (density - 0.45598) + 86.14454 density = exp ((d.s. - 86.14454) / 140.74652) + 0.45598 |
